Dear Jeanne and family, I just heard of Elwood's passing from Shirley. My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to all of you. I remember Elwood as a boy when I lived with my parents on the highway just down from his parent's farm at Calumet. Shirley has been my "forever friend" and keeps me updated on the family. My husband and I live in Echo Bay just east of Sault Ste Marie and not very far from Elliot Lake. I never knew that you lived there at one time. How great that would have been for us to get together. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Perhaps we can connect if you ever visit this area again. Please take care of yourself. Sincerely, Diane and Gerald Adams
Everybody wishes they would win the lottery, but I won when I met Elwood. He was the love of my life, my honeydoo but boy did we have a rocky start! The first time we met was at the Sportsman. He was sitting with six or seven other girls and kept winking at me. I ended up leaving the bar early that night because of him. The second time we met, I was tricked into dancing with him but we've spent many happy years since that night dancing together, especially in the kitchen to old country classics. He was persistent. He finally got me on the phone to agree to our first date by talking about his tractor. I wasn't too interested in the tractor but agreed to the date anyways. My life with Elwood since has been filled with so many great adventures. Until we meet again my honeydoo. We'll be dancing to our song 'Because You Love Me'.
I have a story...and it begins 33 years ago when uncle Elwood was introduced to the family. Christmas day was a day unlike any other...filled with hurried feelings of having to fulfill a schedule of food and entertainment. The impossible was always possible for us on that day! Come one and come all! Thirty three years ago, Uncle Elwood showed up at Christmas with Tante Jeanne. The only English speaking lad in the place. As tradition holds...an initiation was entitled for this man who was attempting to enter the family! Low an behold, an initiation was held after hours of food and dancing to George Jones tunes! Elwood McHardy was going to be inititated to the Turcotte clan! For this honor, he was blindfolded and asked to hammer in a nail to a board within a time frame. During his endeavor, he was cheered on by family until he emanciated his own socks with the ax that he was provided to hammer the nail to the board! Low and behold, he was in quite the state when he realized that he had chopped up his own socks! Many laughs were had and many stories were told about that night! Not a day has gone by where we have not been proud to call him a family member. I thank you, Uncle Elwood, for all the sparkles in your eyes that showed your pride in us! Love you always, xoxoxoxoxox
