Nécrologie de Greta McGowan

Peacefully at the Maxville Manor on Friday, October 8, 2021, Greta Winnifred McGowan (nee Carruthers) of McCrimmon Corners, formerly of West Branch, New Brunswick, passed away after a long wonderful life at the age 103. Predeceased by her parents David Carruthers and Kate Murphy. Beloved wife of the late Reverend James McGowan. Loving mother of Winnifred McGowan, Neil McGowan (Lynn), Sylvia Fraser (late Neil), Norma Kooka (Dara), Janice Visca (Antonio) and James McGowan.  Cherished Grammie of Katherine (Walter), Jason, Trevor (Kim), Brad, Stephen, Ian (Jen), Kate (Duncan), Carl,  Kyle (Emily), Connor, Scott and Meaghan (Spencer). Dearly loved great-grandmother of Miele, Jackson, Ewan, Meaghan and Reid. Fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.

Born in West Branch, NB in 1918, Greta attended Teachers College in Fredericton, NB.  While teaching in Bass River, NB, Greta met a young minister who would become her husband of fifty years, the Rev. J.A. McGowan.  Together, they raised a family in PEI, Nova Scotia and Ontario.  They retired to spend their summers by the shore in Pinette, PEI and winters in McCrimmon Corners, Ontario.  Greta maintained lasting friendships and contributed to each community as a lifelong WMS member, Sunday School Teacher, 4-H and CGIT leader.

A talented painter, quilter and a fierce competitor in card and board games, Greta was renowned for her apple pies and doughnuts.  She was a life-long learner and loved to discuss Canadian politics.  Throughout her life she took great joy in spending time with her family, her extensive network of friends and a good book by the fire.

A special thank you Alyson Graham for her compassion and friendship she provided to Mom. Thank you to the Staff of the Maxville Manor for their wonderful care.
